Rho's "De-stress with DZ" philanthropy event a huge success at the University of Denver

By Emily Bowman-

March 27, 2012

Kaylah Malillos and Miranda Cantrall, Philanthropy Chairmen for the Rho Chapter, accomplished Rho’s first philanthropy event of 2012, with a clever idea to help students at the University of Denver relax while giving back to Delta Zeta’s philanthropies. The University of Denver is on the quarter system, so students were stressing over studying for finals before spring break this March. Kaylah and Miranda created the “De-Stress with DZ” program.

The Friday before finals, students signed up for professional massages from certified masseuses studying at the Colorado School of Massage. The rate was $1 per minute, so it didn’t take long for a line to form! After a relaxing day at the DZ spa, students were invited to join us for a fun Game Night and to take a much-needed break from studying. Food and prizes were donated from local establishments. At the end of the day, Kaylah and Miranda’s creative event raised over $800, which Rho donated to speech and hearing and the Delta Zeta Foundation.

The Greek Community at the University of Denver deserves big thanks for their generous support of our philanthropy event. As one sister observed, “All the other Greek houses loved it!” and are already looking forward to “De-stress with DZ” next year. The Rho Chapter also wants to recognize the tremendous energy and effort of our Philanthropy Chairmen. One sister says, “Thank you so much for all the hard work, Kaylah and Miranda! It was a great event and made me love DZ ten fold!”

Rho Chapter receives 11 awards in Kansas City at Region IX Weekend 2012

The last weekend of February found 31 members of Rho Chapter (University of Denver) gathered in Kansas City to attend the annual Delta Zeta Region IX event. After traveling 10 hours from Denver to Kansas City, the collegians were excited to meet dozens of Delta Zetas from chapters across the great states of Colorado, Kansas, and Missouri at the event.

The Rho Chapter received 11 awards, including the Award for Academic Excellence, the Award for Outstanding Treasurer (Meaghan O’Neill), and Outstanding Large Chapter for Region IX. We were very excited and honored to receive these awards.

This year, the ladies of the Xi Phi Chapter (University of Missouri/Kansas City) were our gracious hostesses. The nine collegiate chapters of Region IX were in attendance, as well as three alumnae chapters – Lawrence, Clay-Platte and Greater Kansas City. The collegians were inspired by the effort and enthusiasm that our Delta Zeta alumnae brought to the event.

The keynote speaker was Lyne S. Tumlinson, University of Northern Colorado - Delta Xi 1976, Lawrence Alumnae Chapter Vice President. A career fitness coach for Career Lift, LLC, she encouraged the collegians to live Delta Zeta’s values and cultivate our leadership potential. She motivated us to develop our potential through the Delta Zeta experience.

The awards ceremony held Saturday evening was a very special event. Not only were we able to celebrate our own chapter’s achievements, but we had the pleasure of sharing in other chapters’ accomplishments.

Founders Day 2009

This time of the year brings with it crisp autumn air, the falling leaves and the beginning of the school year for the almost 12,000 Delta Zeta collegiate members on campuses around the country and in Canada.

On the opening day of school in the fall of 1902, Miami University admitted women as full-time students for the first time. Among those women were six who had come to Miami for the purpose of furthering their education. They came together on Miami’s campus, first as roommates, then as friends. That friendship would soon blossom into a sacred sisterhood. And from six, that sisterhood would become over 206,000, a fact that would astonish and delight our Founders today.

Since October 24, 1902, when the Delta Zeta Articles of Incorporation were signed by Alfa Lloyd, Mary Collins, Anna Keen, Julia Bishop, Mabelle Minton and Anne Simmons, the Sorority has enjoyed a rich history of strong, purposeful women who carry the vision of enlightened leadership – as collegians and alumnae within Delta Zeta and on their campuses and in their communities. We will never forget the purpose of the Sorority or the way in which Delta Zeta has enriched each of our lives. In turn, we enrich the world around us with the ideals our Founders valued – ideals that continue to enhance the women that we are today.

As all Delta Zeta members observe Founders Day, let us proudly wear our colors of rose and green in evidence of our dedication and faith in Delta Zeta.

Given under my hand and seal of the Sorority this 24th day of October in the year of our Lord two thousand and nine and of the Sorority, the one hundred and seventh.

                                                                             Michelle A.
